Abstract: There are many good reasons to continue to explore space sending people back to industrialize the Moon and/or to populate Mars. It is quite obvious to think to associate these reasons to purposes of scientific discovery, to spin-off of more general economic benefits, and also the desire of a country to conquer even the control of the space. In other words, the question about space exploration come down to whether we want to bring the solar system within mankind’s sphere of economic influence. But these are “acceptable reasons”, very comfortable to discuss because they can be logically defended. When we contemplate committing large sums of money to a project, we tend to dismiss the “real reasons” and in particular in space exploration those are the most important. First, most of us want to be, both as individuals and as societies, the first or the best in some activity. We want to stand out. A second reason is curiosity. Who among us has not had the urge to know what’s on the other side of the ocean? Finally, we humans, since the earliest civilizations, want to leave something behind to show the next generation, or the generations after that. They are the main drivers. Of course the space program also addresses the acceptable reasons, and in the end this is imperative. Societies will not succeed in the long run if they place their resources and their efforts in enterprises that, for whatever reason, don’t provide concrete value. The aim of this speech is to explain that the adventure to Mars is a combination of “acceptable” and “real” reasons, but it is also a new frontier of the space exploration. It has to be an effort of a truly international
cooperation, not just for the amount of financial resource needed, but because it is fundamental to aggregate the knowledge and the experience of the most beautiful minds of the globe, to succeed in the most challenging project of our time. A project that requires the leadership of a great country and the support of all of those want to participate in this new aerospatial road to Mars.
